A key driver in the probiotics market is the increasing awareness about the many health benefits offered by these probiotic products. Probiotics are well known for their nutritional as well as therapeutic characteristics. Probiotics help in treating and preventing digestive tracts and gastrointestinal infections or diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and diarrhoea. They can also be utilized in functional foods and beverages. For instance, in dairy products, they can assist in improved digestion, reduce bad cholesterol levels, foster the brain function, and enhance the immunity. Moreover, consumers are becoming aware of the detoxification and anti-ageing properties of probiotics.

Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) is the most commonly used probiotic, or “good” bacteria. Many healthy bacteria live in the intestines and vagina where they protect against the “bad” bacteria that cause disease. Lactobacillus is a most general probiotic, which is mostly found in yoghurt and other fermented foods. Its benefits include helping people to digest lactose in milk and also treat diarrhoea. There are some Lactobacillus strains such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus Brevis, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus Plantarum etc. which have different applications.

Lack of clarity and uniformity in food standards globally and higher price puts products in a niche bracket. These are the major factors hindering the probiotics market. Also, the food standards across the world are dissimilar. They are not uniform and are often misinterpreted. There is an ambiguity, whether the regulations related to dietary supplements apply to the probiotics market or not. But, as the probiotics are also used as a dietary supplement, these regulations are applicable to probiotic market players. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the regulatory body, which standardizes the dietary ingredients as well as supplementary products. The rules and regulations are amended such that, the manufacturers and traders of the nutritional elements and supplements won’t be able to falsely market or advertise their products. One such act, which restricts the marketing of the misguided or contaminated dietary products, is the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA).

The global probiotics market segments include application, end-user, and strain types.

Applications are  segmented into:

  • Food and beverages
  • Dietary and supplements
  • Animal feed products

End –users are segmented into:

  • Human
  • Animal

Strain types are segmented into:

  • Lactobacillus
  • Streptococcus
  • Bifidobacterium
  • Yeast
  • Spore formers

Geographically, the Global Probiotics market has been segmented on the basis of four major regions, which includes:

  • North America – U.S. & Canada
  • Asia Pacific – China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, RoAPAC
  • Europe – UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, RoE
  • Rest of World – Latin America, Middle East and Africa, and Rest of Africa

Asia Pacific is anticipated to account for the largest market share during the forecast period. An ageing population, increase in a number of gut disorders, expanding food & beverage industry and increasing demand for dietary supplements are the main drivers for the growth of probiotics market in this region. When talking about the untapped markets, there is no better fit than China, in terms of the potential and promise it holds for probiotics. China has a huge cattle and dairy presence globally. Naturally, this will act as a huge base for fortifying foods which can be made using probiotics. On the other hand, Europe is anticipated to be the fastest-growing region for the probiotics market. The demand for fermented milk is relatively high in most European countries. The demand for probiotic functional products is also on the rise owing to increase in demand for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and companies launching probiotic beverages in the market. The strong association between the consumption of live bacteria and gut health, which plays a significant role in reducing inflammation (a predominant risk factor for illnesses such as arthritis, cancer, and heart disease), is driving the European probiotics market.

The Probiotics Market is segmented based on applications which are sub-divided into food and beverages, dietary and supplements, and animal feed products, and is also segmented on the basis of end-users which are sub-divided into human and animal.  On the basis of strain types, the market is divided into Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Bifidobacterium, yeast, and spore formers.

On 3rd November 2017, Nestlé USA acquired Chameleon Cold-Brew, a leading provider of premium-crafted coffee sourced consciously and grown sustainably. Founded in 2010, Chameleon has become the number one organic cold-brew brand in the U.S., and one of the top three refrigerated cold-brew brands in the U.S. Chameleon’s products are available in a wide variety of formats: ready-to-drink cold-brew, cold-brew concentrate, kegs, cold-brew kits and whole bean coffee.
