Natural gas is a fossil fuel majorly comprising of methane. As with other fossil fuels, it is formed deep beneath the earth’s surface due to the decomposition of dead plants and animals under extreme heat and pressures. Natural gas is cleaner than most other fossilized fuels. However, its calorific value is lower than the fossil fuels like petrol, diesel, and LPG. With this, liquified natural gas is compressed at -290 degrees in liquified form, which aids in its transportation and heat generation.

Belgium does not produce any kind of natural gas and entirely depends upon imports to meet its needs. Belgium is also considered the ninth largest importer of LNG in the European region. The LNG imports in 2017 witnessed an increase of 11.7% from 2016.

Gas imports into Belgium are expanded by origin and supply type. The Netherlands and Norway are the key pipeline suppliers, providing about one-third of total gas imports. The key factors contributing to the Belgium LNG market growth are the extreme cold weather and the increasing road transportation within the country.

Belgium’s geographical position dictates its LNG use. Due to Belgium’s developed infrastructure and geographical location between the sources of European gas to its north and west and their primary markets to the south and east of Belgium, it is a major hub for gas supply in Europe. It has a robust, well-integrated transport network with other countries through 18 entry points.

In 2018, Shell had inaugurated its first Belgian LNG station in Herstal, in Liège prefecture. The station near the three-border point at the E313 caters to trucks and is a key route for international road cargo. The new station has a capacity of 3.5 KT (kilotons) of LNG and can supply fuel to 150 trucks in a day with LNG.

In March 2021, Fluxys, a Belgium LNG supplier, partnered with Hanseatic Energy Hub (HEH), the planned LNG import terminal developer at Stade in northern Germany. With these new deployments in place, Belgium has become a transportation hub of LNG in the European region.

The top LNG companies in the country are Fluxys LNG SA, Eni, Prima LNG, etc.
