The important driver increasing growth in the global LiDAR technology market is the demand for stronger security and sensor accuracy. In the last few years, requirements for security-related fields have raised due to concern over crime prevention. Aerial LiDAR consists of high-frequency laser scanners that record the differential time between the emission of the laser pulses and the reception of the reflected signal from the environment. By combining this data with the position and orientation of the scanner, LiDAR creates accurate and detailed models of the surface of the earth with accuracy down to +/-10 cm. An aerial LiDAR system is installed either on a fixed wing aircraft or a helicopter. Aerial LiDAR technology is a cost-effective method of collecting detailed bathymetric and topographic information and is superior to traditional surveying in terms of accuracy, access, speed, canopy penetration and resolution for a wide range of applications. A large number of mapping and surveying products can be produced by using airborne LiDAR such as digital elevation models (DEMs), digital terrain models (DTMs) and Contours, among others. Owing to its suitability for a large number of applications and its superiority over traditional topographic and bathymetric surveying, aerial LiDAR is expected to experience increased demand during the forecast period of 2018 to 2026.

Cost and size of the modern generation LiDAR sensors and lack of awareness are the major factors hindering the LiDAR technology market. In order to deploy LiDAR systems, companies must make an initial investment in the installation of these intelligent laser systems. The cost of these devices is currently very high, as the market is not yet mature.
