The countries evaluated for the growth assessment of the Europe waste-to-energy (WtE) market are Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Italy, Poland, Belgium, and the rest of Europe. The UK is facing a power generation deficit, due to the closing of several of its coal and nuclear power plants. The primary renewable energy sources are biomass, energy from offshore wind farms, and waste. The waste policy of the region is considered to be a devolved matter, wherein the administrations of Northern Island, Wales, and Scotland, are responsible for strategies and policies for waste management in these regions. In 2016, the UK generated 222.9 tonnes million tonnes of total waste. France lags behind in comparison to other countries of Europe, with regard to waste management. The country generated a considerable amount of municipal waste in 2018, and recycled only a minor part of household waste in 2015, as compared to other European countries. The country is projected to show promising growth, due to the Energy Transition Act of 2015 that aims to improve recycling rates by at least 10% by 2020. The country was also among the top six nations for ‘composting’ – using waste to create energy, in 2015.
