Biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP) production systems is an integrated system for producing power that encompasses three main components which include Biomass/feedstock preparation, energy conversion, power and heat production. Biomass CHP systems typically use the gas and steam released by heat created from biomass boiler or wood that drives a generator or turbine for power production. The remaining thermal energy can be used for other processes. Biomass CHP systems are being promoted and subsidized across the globe making them potentially attractive investment option for the industries that require sustained and consistent heat demand. The electric power produced in integration is utilized for onsite processes or is exported to the connected distributed grid. The fastest segment by application is that of paper & pulp. Paper and pulp mills produce a large amount of energy-rich biomass as their residual waste product or by-product. Biomass boilers in pulp and paper industries are designed to utilize these residual waste to meet industrial power needs. Majority of these residual wastes are produced during pulp and paper manufacturing, wood preparation, the chemical recovery process, wastewater management and processing of recycled paper. Stoker fed boilers, and fluidized bed boilers are largely utilized in the paper and pulp industries to meet the demand for heat generation. Adoption of biomass recovery and its conversion to energy source has offered paper and pulp industries with various benefits that include high-efficiency potential, waste volume reduction, hygienic disposal, power generation from recovered produced heat and low cost of capital involvement.

The restraints and challenges of the industrial biomass boiler market are high installation cost & availability of substitute energy sources. The main restraint is the high installation cost. Biomass boiler is not low-priced and can cost up to three to four times more than a standard fossil fuel boiler. However, the total cost of biomass systems varies between manufacturers, types, and installers. As per Inkwood Research analysis, the average installation cost for an automatically fed boiler is around $15,867 to be installed, for an automatically fed boiler, this includes installation of a fuel store, flue and VAT. Further, the semi-automated log boiler (15 kW) is expected to cost around $9,255 to $13,222. Similarly, the semi-automated log boiler (25 kW) cost around $13,222 to $19,833. The 12 kW biomass boiler cost around $9,255. These costs are for smaller to medium systems; nevertheless, for a bigger system, the cost varies greatly depending on the requirement.
