The global phase change material market is segmented on the basis of the type of PCM i.e. paraffin, salt hydrates, and others. Paraffin-based PCMs are the largest revenue-generating PCMs. These PCMs are extensively used because of the abundance in the supply of paraffin wax coupled with a wide operating temperature range. Salt hydrates are the second-largest revenue-generating PCM product. Salt hydrate-based (inorganic) PCMs were commercialized earlier than paraffin-based PCM and now command a major share of the (commercialized) PCM market. Fatty acids are one of the organic PCMs. These PCMs have numerous advantages in comparison to other forms of PCMs, such as nontoxicity and stable operating temperature range.

The Phase change materials have many applications and the global phase change material market is segmented on the basis of application i.e. building and construction, commercial refrigeration, HVAC, energy storage, shipping and transportation, textiles, and others. Buildings and cold storage applications are the largest markets for PCMs; however, textiles are expected to see increased demand for PCMs. Various materials have been considered for building applications, such as paraffin wax, bio-based organic materials, and eutectic salts, to take advantage of the PCMs’ latent heat capacities and high storage densities. PCMs have caught the attention of the textiles industry because of their high capacity for heat storage. They make it possible to engineer fabrics that help regulate human body temperature.

Geographically, the phase change material market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of World. Europe is the biggest market for PCM products. High awareness about benefits of PCM products, strict government regulations regarding energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gasses are the factors that are leading to market growth in this region. North America is the second largest market for PCM as there is high demand for these products in HVAC systems and energy storage. Asia Pacific market for PCM is expected to show a good growth rate due to increasing urbanization and growth of building and construction industry.

Conservation of energy, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, operation over a long period of time, the advantage of PCMs’ high thermal mass, a wide range of melting temperatures, and influence on peak load are some of the major drivers for growth in the global phase change material market. PCMs help saves energy primarily in applications such as HVAC and building and construction. PCMs can potentially have energy savings of 10% to 30% compared to existing cooling energy consumption. PCMs have a wide range of melting points, making them ideally suited for a variety of applications.

Outlast Technologies, CSafe Global, Dow Chemicals, DuPont BASF, Henkel, and Entropy Solutions are some of the major players in the global phase change material market. New products were launched for almost all applications, though prominent among them were textiles, cold storage, and packaging. Most players in the PCM market have common marketing strategies to position their products, including advertising them as being cost- and energy- efficient and environmentally friendly. Joint ventures, investments, divestments, and acquisitions were the preferred strategies in the PCM market, with major players collaborating with universities and research institutes to develop new products, increase the latent heat of materials and evaluate phase change temperature options.
